Our Work
As a network of experienced licensed wildlife rehabilitators and rescuers, we are dedicated to the welfare of urban wildlife. We are committed to the concept of compassionate conservation and put our mission into practice by engaging in four main activities.
We call it our AREA Plan:
With increasing urbanization of the environment and the continuing loss of natural habitat, the fate of city wildlife has become our heartfelt concern. Advocacy, Rehabilitation, Education, and Advice are the cornerstones of our endeavor to promote compassion and understanding for our wild neighbors and to ensure the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife in our city.
- Our Advocacy gives a voice to wildlife that cannot speak for themselves.
- In our Rehabilitation work we strive to provide the best care possible for our wild patients. We do so by participating in continuing education offered by accredited wildlife organizations and agencies, exchanging experiences and case studies with colleagues locally and across the nation and participating in wildlife-related research programs.
- Another mainstay of our activities is Education. In addition to producing educational material and events for the public, we actively seek to get more New Yorkers involved in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation by organizing workshops and lectures, and offering a mentoring program for beginning wildlife rehabilitators. Our goal is to expand our network of licensed wildlife rehabilitators throughout the five boroughs and to establish a wildlife rescue team of well-trained volunteers who will be able to respond to wildlife-related issues on site. This kind of service will benefit not only our own network but also other wildlife-related organizations in the metro area.
- Every year we receive hundreds of phone calls from members of the public seeking Advice about wildlife-related issues. We provide answers and information and offer humane solutions in human-wildlife conflict situations.
